With kids returning to school this month there was plenty for the group to discuss. From the pressures of the 11 plus, to dealing with bad behaviour at school and new friend groups. We reminisced on our own school days and before long it was time to hear from our guest speaker.
Unfortunately our advertised speaker could not make it, but through our ever growing network of professional services and connections, Katheryn Pritchard of Rosebud Counselling stepped in at the last minute, to discuss “Attachment Theory”. Katheryn explained how understanding our own attachment style can help us communicate more effectivley with our children and partners.
What is attachment theory?
Attachment theory identifies four primary attachment styles: secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganised. Those with a secure attachment style tend to have a strong sense of self-worth, trust, and comfort with intimacy. They are typically able to form healthy, balanced relationships. Anxious individuals often fear abandonment and seek constant reassurance, while avoidant individuals tend to prioritise independence and may struggle with emotional closeness. Disorganised attachment results from inconsistent or traumatic early experiences and can lead to difficulties in regulating emotions and forming stable relationships.
Understanding these attachment styles can be instrumental in fostering healthier relationships. By recognising and addressing our own attachment patterns, we can work towards building more secure, fulfilling connections with others. Moreover, this awareness can provide invaluable insights into the dynamics of our relationships. There is no right or wrong type, this exercise may help to understand why we feel the way we do, allowing us to navigate challenges and conflicts with greater empathy and understanding of ourselves and those around us.

In today's fast-paced world, where the quality of our relationships profoundly impacts our well-being, attachment theory offers a valuable framework for cultivating lasting and meaningful connections. As we delved deeper into this theory, we uncovered the profound influence of our early experiences on the way we relate to others today. Armed with this knowledge, we are better equipped to nurture healthy, fulfilling relationships that contribute positively to their overall mental and emotional well-being.
